How much data do I need for a 2-week trip?

8 Oct 2026 · 6 min read · Alpha eSIM team

Most travellers buy far more data than they use, or far less. The fix is simple: estimate by the hour, not by the day.

What uses data, per hour

Maps and browsing60 MB
Social media300 MB
Music streaming70 MB
Video calls400 MB
Streaming video (SD)700 MB

These are typical figures. Video quality matters most: one hour of HD video can use as much as four hours of SD.

Three kinds of traveller

Light3 GBMaps, messages, a little browsing. About 200 MB a day.
Regular8 GBMaps, social media, music. About 550 MB a day.
Heavy20 GBVideo calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop.

These are for a two-week trip with hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings. Without Wi-Fi, roughly double them.

Save data without trying

Download maps and playlists on Wi-Fi before you go. Set photo backups to Wi-Fi only. Turn off autoplay for videos in social apps.
